The Duka - Intlantsi Residency in the village of Hamburg, Eastern Cape, South Africa
Between 11th and 22nd June, Duka Dance created, rehearsed and taught in the village of Hamburg, Eastern Cape, South Africa. During this two week residency at Emthonjeni Arts, aside from preparing for The Grahamstown National Arts Festival, they lead a five day intensive with The Intlantsi group that work as part of the Keiskamma Trust. With this Intlantsi group of 18 volunteers, Duka lead workshops in creating fresh work and in producing dance, music and stories. As well as learning how to facilitate sessions at After-care, Intlantsi performed their own work in front of large audiences made up from their own communities. In co-ordination with these organisations, Duka were able to also go into schools in and around the rural areas of Hamburg, Lover’s twist and Umgababa in order to teach dance and storytelling. Meanwhile hosting evening fireside sessions of spontaneous performance open for the village community.
Through all of this work, within these two weeks, Duka Dance were privileged enough to communicate and build relationships with more than 600 people in these areas.
